AMC - Environment and workers

AMC Networks adquiere Chellomedia - AMC Networks

The particularities of the sector

AMC International approaches its environmental responsibility from two different perspectives. The first has to do with internal management and resource consumption, and the second is related to the specific nature of all media and their undoubted ability to promote a culture of sustainable development.

With regard to the first perspective, and due to the specific characteristics of the audiovisual sector, AMC's direct impact on the environment is rather small, although the company has implemented various measures to reduce its environmental impact.

On the other hand, a media company's ability to highlight environmental issues can have a much greater impact.

In any case, the data provided in this section are intended as a starting point for advancing the chain's sustainability objectives.

Eco-efficiency in internal management

The environmental management of AMC's activity falls mainly on the Purchasing and General Services Department and the Group's Joint Prevention Service, which devote special attention to energy saving plans and to the reduction, reuse and recycling of waste. During 2020, there have been increases in the consumption of practically all energy products. This is due to the low temperatures recorded on average during the year and, in particular, the consumption of diesel oil derived from the start-up of generators to make up for power outages.

One of the main sources of energy consumption in our sector is studio lighting. In this line, in 2020 the replacement started in 2015 of 30% of the lighting in the studios by the so-called "cold light" has been completed, with the consequent saving of 80% of electricity consumption compared to conventional lighting.

This system also leads to a reduction in the use of air conditioning on the sets, as it does not have to overcome the calorific contribution that such lighting generates. With regard to transportation to the work center, AMC provides its employees with public transportation, thus trying to contribute to the reduction of direct pollution by private vehicles. AMC's workplaces use a significant amount of resources and generate, as part of their daily activities, a considerable volume of office waste: paper, recording tapes, stage elements, computer and lighting equipment, etc. AMC's actions in this regard are aimed at a double improvement: on the one hand, in a more efficient use of existing resources, and on the other hand, in the removal and recycling of such waste through competent companies in the field.

The facilities at 11 Pennsylvania Plaza New York, NY 10001 have contracted environmental consulting and management services and waste collection and transportation services for the material generated that may be considered hazardous, such as solvents, aerosols, fluorescent tubes, electrical and electronic equipment and paint waste. In the case of other non-hazardous waste, there is a daily collection, transport and disposal service.

AMC also maintains containers for the collection of batteries, electronic materials, paper documents and other data media. Measurements for the 2020 fiscal year point to a greater amount of waste managed.

It should also be noted that this report, as well as the AMC Group's Annual Report for 2020, have been prepared for the first time using chlorine-free paper.
